Police are investigating after a shooting in Salford last night (Sunday). Shots were fired in Eccles town centre. Fortunately, no one was hurt. The shooting is the latest in a spate in the city this year. Detectives say a man in dark clothing is believed to have fled in a grey people carrier following the incident. No arrests have been made. In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 10pm on Sunday, December 8, police were called to Church Street, Eccles, to reports of a firearms discharge. "The offender was described as a man wearing dark clothing and is believed to have made off in a grey people carrier. "No one was injured and no arrests have yet been made. "Enquiries are ongoing." Detective Inspector Joanne Kay said: “Fortunately, no one was hurt in this instance. "I am particularly keen to speak to anyone that was on or around Church Street at the time of this incident and may have heard or seen anything unusual or suspicious.” There have now been at least 14 shootings in Salford this year - and more than 55 in Greater Manchester. In October, police were called to reports of the third shooting on the same street this year. Officers were called to Quay View and Montford Street, Ordsall, at around 8am on October 18. Three linked shootings in Wigan in September are thought to be linked to Salford. One line of inquiry is that they stem from a fallout within an organised crime gang involved in drugs and money laundering. Anti gun-crime police have recognised Salford as requiring special attention, in disrupting gangs and securing community engagement. Earlier this month, Detective Supt Danny Inglis, of GMP's Serious and Organised Crime Lead, told the Manchester Evening News: "We have done a lot of work in Salford because that is where a lot of the threat has been for some time. "We have intensified activity there and are tackling it with a range of tactics including executing warrants based on intelligence provided. "In the next few months we will see the results of the intensification - through the court process. "We have recovered a number of firearms in the last month. "Salford is an area of focus because for some time we have had organised crime groups that are fighting over territory, particularly around drugs and the money that is earned from that trade."
