An Olive Garden manager who readily acceded to a white customer’s demand that she not be served by two African-American employees has been canned, the restaurant said. But the injury had already been inflicted. Olive Garden host Amira Donahue, who is black, told the Evansville Courier & Press that the treatment by the customer left both her and the server “in tears for most of the day.” The server, she said, was too upset to speak to press. It started Saturday night during the dinner rush, Donahue told the Courier & Press, when a white woman being waited on by an African-American server asked that the person be swapped out for a Caucasian. She also complained to the manager about Donahue, and proceeded to berate the 16-year-old in front of the dining crowd for being “disrespectful,” Donahue told the newspaper. But she didn’t stop there. “The lady also made comments about me to another coworker saying that I am not family-friendly and that I should go work at a strip club instead of an Olive Garden,” Donahue told WEHT-TV, and that the woman asked “am I even black, am I from here, am I from America, just like offhand comments like that and referring me to the ‘other one’. ” After all that, the woman demanded a refund on a half-eaten meal. The dinner crowd volume ensured there were multiple witnesses, and many of them posted their accounts on social media. Donahue said the manager most likely took the company’s customer-is-always-right ethos a bit too literally in this case. “We just have this policy where it’s like the customer is always right no matter what, so I guess he was just trying to help the customer,” she told the Courier & Press. “We deserve more respect than that. I’m literally a 16-year-old child, and this grown woman was just screaming at me in front of everybody.” The manager in question has been fired, a company spokesman told the Daily News in an emailed statement. “We have zero tolerance for discrimination of any kind, and the manager involved no longer works for our company,” the company said.
