The Battleship Missouri Memorial is located just a ship’s length from the USS Arizona Memorial. Visitors have a unique and immersive historical experience that spans the sinking of USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor and Imperial Japan’s formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.. Following a career that spans three wars, the “Mighty Mo” was decommissioned and donated to the nonprofit USS Missouri Memorial Association to oversee her care and preservation. The ”Mighty Mo” was launched into service on January 29,1944. More than a half century later, January 29, 1999, it was opened to the public in Pearl Harbor as an historical attraction. Since opening to the public, the Battleship Missouri Memorial has attracted more than 9-million visitors from around the world.
The Mighty Mo will be involved in one of two major events in 2020 that commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. The first one, the Arsenal of Democracy Flyover, will take place on Victory in Europe (VE) Day - Friday, May 8, 2020. The event will include commemorative activities in and around the nation’s capital. The flyover will coincide with a ceremony for veterans at the National World War II Memorial. Over 100 vintage "warbirds" of various types will fly over the National Mall in 24 separate, historically sequenced formations. These formations will represent World War II’s major battles, from the Battle of Britain through the final air assault on Japan.
In addition to the Arsenal of Democracy 75th commemoration flyover, between August 29 and September 2, 2020, the Battleship Missouri Memorial and Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II in the Pacific. On September 2 a special ceremony will pay tribute to the historic signing of the document of Japan’s surrender on the deck of the Battleship Missouri on September 2, 1945. The ceremony will take place on Pier Foxtrot 5 in Pearl Harbor, where the Mighty Mo is permanently docked. In addition to members of the armed forces, the five days of events will bring together representatives from all of the countries that signed the historic documents ending WW II.
