Police led through Dumbarton on high-speed chase which ended in a crash

Police led through Dumbarton on high-speed chase which ended in a crash A drink-driver caught red-handed by cops trying to pull off a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre led police on a 10-minute pursuit through Dumbarton.  Skipping several red lights, pulling out in front of cars and travelling at speeds in excess of 60mph, Anthony McBride’s journey only ended when he collided with a van which toppled over, into a parked car.  The 28-year-old appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court last week and admitted dangerously driving as well as getting behind the wheel having consumed so much alcohol he failed a breath test.  Shocking CCTV images were shown in court which detailed the perilous manoeuvres McBride made as he sped from outside Cardross to Dumbarton East on Sunday, February 3.  Procurator fiscal depute Kevin Docherty told the court how he attracted the attention of cops just before 3.30pm when officers travelling towards Helensburgh in a marked police car observed a silver VW Golf driven by McBride on the wrong side of the road travelling directly towards them while overtaking another vehicle.  The court heard the cop who was driving had to brake heavily to “prevent a head-on collision” with the police car and McBride’s car narrowly missing each other.  Mr Docherty continued: “Officers observed McBride continue to overtake a van having to swerve back in.  “Due to the dangerous manner of the driving, the officer applied the emergency blue lights before making a u-turn.  “They made attempts to catch up with McBride.”  As the pursuit entered Dumbarton, McBride turned into Westcliff. Mr Docherty went on: “As McBride drove up the hill, he appeared to be accelerating with thick smoke coming from the exhaust pipe in an attempt to make off from the officers.”  Cut price Dumbarton mansion plummets by more than £1m in value  Blue lights were applied again by the officers. The fiscal depute said: “The police sergeant updated the police control room saying he was in pursuit and seeking assistance.  “McBride turned out of Cardross Road without stopping. The sergeant remained a safe distance behind with blue lights and sirens in operation.  “He turned onto the A814 heading east towards Dumbarton town centre.  “He didn’t stop and moved onto the westbound carriageway overtaking vehicles.  “As he approached the traffic lights at Castlehill Road, there was stationary traffic at the red light.  “McBride continued at 50mph swerving onto the opposing carriageway and travelled through red traffic lights on the wrong side of the road narrowly missing oncoming vehicles and a vehicle which had come out of a junction.”  The dangerous driving continued further into the town. Mr Docherty said: “The police vehicle was travelling at 60mph but still wasn’t gaining on McBride.”  Four Dumbarton police officers are rewarded for their bravery  The court heard McBride proceeded to swerve between lanes, overtaking and undertaking cars as he approached the Church Street roundabout.  The fiscal depute said: “As he approached the roundabout, he slowed slight
