Meaning of OUT OF LUCK - A Really Short English Lesson with Subtitles

READ ALONG TO PRACTICE YOUR ENGLISH AND TO LEARN THE MEANING OF OUT OF LUCK: So, in English, when you are out of luck it means that you can't get the thing that you want because there aren't any more of them. At least, that's one definition of it. So, maybe you go to the store because you really want to buy a can of Coca-Cola. Maybe you really like drinking Coke. And you go to the store, and you walk into the store, and you go to the cooler where they keep the Coca-Cola nice and cold, and there's none left. And you go to the owner of the store and you say, "I really wanted to buy some Coca-Cola today." The store owner might say, "I'm sorry, you're out of luck. "There is none left. "We have sold all of the cans and bottles of Coke. "There is no more. "You are out of luck." So, basically, what that means is the opposite of being lucky. When you're lucky, things go your way. When you are out of luck, things are going the opposite of your way. They're going really, really badly.

So, we have the opposite phrase as well. To be in luck. In the same story, you might go to the store owner and say, "I really wanted to buy some Coke today, "and you don't have any Coca-Cola left." And the store owner might say, "You're out of luck." But he could also say, "Oh, you're in luck, "I have some more in the back storage room." So, as much as you can sometimes be out of luck, sometimes, you can also be in luck, and things can go your way. One last term with luck. You can also have bad luck. When you have bad luck, it means that things throughout your day just don't go very good at all. So, hopefully, you always have good luck. Hopefully, you always are in luck. And hopefully, you are never out of luck, as you go through your day in the future.
