President Donald Trump said his administration is looking into reports there has been an explosion near an outpost where U.S. troops are located in northern Syria.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House as he left for a rally in Louisiana, Trump said, "We'll take a look at it."
A U.S. official said a projectile landed near the outpost but it wasn't clear who fired it and that no American troops were hurt. The explosion marked the first time a coalition base has come in the line of fire since Turkey launched its offensive into Syria on Wednesday.
Trump said the U.S. "has a very good relationship with Turkey" but warned, "if Turkey does something that it shouldn't be doing, we will put on sanctions, the likes of which very few countries have ever seen before."
Asked what the red line would be for the sanctions to be implemented, Trump said only, "We'll see."
Trump also said the U.S. is sending more troops to Saudi Arabia which he called "a very good ally" which buys "hundreds of billions of dollars worth of merchandise" from the U.S.
He said Saudi Arabia will be paying the U.S. "for everything we're doing to help them."
Earlier, the Pentagon announced the U.S. will send several dozen fighter jets along with other aircraft and additional air defenses to Saudi Arabia to help protect the kingdom from Iranian attacks.
