Gus Van Sant 'Recent Paintings Hollywood Boulevard' at VITO SCHNABEL

Gus Van Sant 'Recent Paintings Hollywood Boulevard' at VITO SCHNABEL James Kalm quite the studio early last night, and pedaled to the western edge of SoHo, to take in the Gus Van Sant “Recent Paintings Hollywood Boulevard” show at VITO SCHNABEL PROJECT. After forty years in NYC, it seems your reporter is witnessing a repeat of the cycles. SoHo and Tribeca, which when he came to town, were the booming center of the art scene, are again becoming a trendy new gallery neighborhood. And Gus’s watercolors of male nudes relate to the paintings of some of the German Trans-Avant-garde artists like Salomé, Rainer Fetting, and Helmut Middendorf who were tearing up the art scene about the same time. Van Sant has depicted giant vaporous nudes inhabiting the highways and valleys of the Hollywood hills, tromping on cars, and leaning on local landmark buildings, perhaps an analogy to the collision of desire with Tinsel Town’s physical challenges. A musical introduction is provided by Adjua-Ajamu @adjuamusic. This program was recorded on September 11, 2019.
