Today the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released their Special Report on Climate Change and Land and for the first time have recognized the rights of the world’s Indigenous Peoples and local communities is a scalable climate solution. Indigenous people 42 countries, spanning 76% of the world’s tropical forests, have come together, responding to the report. In their statement they commend the scientific findings that show these communities play a critical role in stewarding and safeguarding the world’s lands and forests but urge them now to be acted upon. Their demands must be supported and respected in order to lower global emissions and combat the climate crisis.
