In this video, I’m going to answer a question I received about how to get rid of cravings during your menstrual cycle.
This particular woman is on keto (ketogenic diet) and is doing intermittent fasting. So, she usually doesn’t experience any cravings at all. But, during menstruation, she gets awful cravings.
So, what causes cravings, and what should you do about it?
First off, if you’re not on the ketogenic diet and you’re not doing intermittent fasting—you need to start. If you’re doing carbs, you need to take care of your blood sugar and high insulin. Cutting out carbs and starting on keto and intermittent fasting will help you get rid of your food cravings altogether.
But, if you still have period cravings on keto and intermittent fasting, it usually has to do with low serotonin.
Serotonin — Is a neurotransmitter made in the gut and in the brain stem.
The most likely reason for low serotonin is low estrogen. Some of the symptoms of low estrogen are:
• Mood swings
• Headaches
• Depression
• Decreased Libido
So, now you’re probably wondering how to reduce period cravings, or even make them go away completely. If you have low serotonin you can do two things:
1. You can take L-Tryptophan, which is the precursor to serotonin. You can find it at a health food store. Just be sure to take L-Tryptophan on an empty stomach.
2. You can raise your estrogen. What typically causes low estrogen is something pushing it down like:
• Cortisol from stress (adrenal fatigue)
• High levels of testosterone or androgens (which can go back to high insulin)
You can take high-quality flaxseed oil to help elevate estrogen to a certain degree.
