Over the next few weeks we will attempt to raise those voices as we begin a new sermon series, “Wonder Women”. We will look at some familiar, and some perhaps unfamiliar, Bible characters in an effort to give them a voice, and hopefully to give us new insights. It is important for us to understand the context within which our sacred text, the Holy Bible, has been written and how the historically silenced voices are being raised today with new understanding and context. Many of these voices, like ours, have been silenced or denied as a part of the family of God. Voices of women are important to our understanding of God. They are the voices of creation and of a God who is described in the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) as a mother hen, a nursing mother, a woman in labor – and reintroduced in the New Testament (Christian Bible) as a woman looking for her lost coin. These are just some of the images we find there. Today, Reverend Erin will look at the story of Esther and how her beliefs and actions impacted her faith and the faith of a nation.
