The Australian Medical Association’s South Australian President Dr Chris Moy says government funding to tackle the outbreak of COVID-19 is “critical” because “we are facing a relatively unprecedented crisis”. As part of a $2.4 billion plan to stop the spread of the coronavirus, up to 100 pop-up clinics will be created across the country and the government will subsidise video consultations.
Mr Moy told Sky News the funding would provide telehealth items and individual testing facilities which would allow for the treatment of infected patients without putting the health workers or other patients at risk of contracting the disease.
“What has been shown is that dealing with the pandemic is not a theoretical exercise from a book, it is a practical exercise,” he said.
“We will be asking the government to listen to practical issues of GPs because a lot of the issues are because there hasn’t been a real understanding of what we need.
“There will still be more resources needed.”
