We're Going To Try: The Problem Of Plastic Pollution

As a student undergoing studies in Animal Behaviour, I was granted the incredible opportunity to travel with Flinders University to the Maldives. When we think of the Maldives, we tend to picture beautiful beaches, and amazing resorts; however, this is not always the case. Naifaru is a small, local island with a population of 6,000 people, a bunch of stray cats, some pretty cool fish, and acres, and acres of plastic.

The global problem from plastic pollution we are currently facing has spiralled completely out of control. In first world countries, like Australia, we use plastic without second thought "It's just one bag", "I'll recycle it, it's fine." Until you step foot onto the places that are ACTUALLY affected by OUR careless actions, you will not understand the severity of this issue.

So, I have decided to create a video, using original lyrics, to demonstrate just SOME of the waste I saw on this ONE, TINY island. It's time to change. Our overuse of plastic is now affecting not only the marine life who swallow it, get caught in it, or are suffocated by it, but also local communities, whose only options are to keep our pollution on their land, or incinerate it, leaving nothing by carcinogenic fumes for the locals to breathe in.

Despite the severity of this, this is a message of hope. We need to be better; and we can be. This is a message to the growing generations, the fighters, the ones who care, to not give up. This is not an easy job. We need to save the world, and unfortunately, there will be some we won't be able to save; but as long as we keep trying, keep fighting, and just keep swimming ;) , we've got this.

We can't save everyone, but we're going to try. Enjoy x
