Syria war: Hundreds of thousands flee as airstrikes continue - BBC News The conflict in Syria is on the verge of a dangerous escalation, according to a senior United Nations official. The comments come as Turkey threatened to launch a new military offensive. Talks between Turkey and Russia, which backs the Syrian government, failed to reach agreement on how to calm fighting in Idlib, the last mainly rebel-held region in Syria. More than 400 people are reported to have been killed in a major offensive by Syrian government forces which began in December.
Nearly a million people have fled the onslaught, and some are now dying from the cold. It's the biggest movement of displaced people in Syria's nine year conflict. The BBC News at Ten presented by Reeta Chakrabarti has this report from the BBC’s International Correspondent, Orla Guerin which contains distressing images.
