Lots of people have suggested that I should try a combination of clear epoxy and varnish on the washboards. Epoxy is very waterproof and hard-wearing, but not very resistant to UV, hence the need to coat it with varnish. Lots of help from my daughter who will be in charge of varnishing the interior. Certainly not a disaster by any stretch of the imagination, but definitely a learning curve.
