► On the 11th of November 1979, Captain Javier Lerdo de Tejada alongside co-pilot Ramon Zuazo were sitting in their Sud Aviation SE 210 Caravelle waiting for permission to take off. After a gruelling 4-hour delay for one reason or another, the tower gave them the all clear, and the pair, alongside Francisco Javier Rodriguez, an aviation mechanic and navigator expected a routine flight.

The pilot and his crew were tasked with taking 109 German and Austrian tourists to Las Palmas, located in the Canary Islands outside north-western Africa. The Sud Caravelle that they were piloting was a French short to medium range jet airliner and as such could not make it the entire distance without refuelling along the way. Thus, the plan was first to travel to Mallorca, get refuelled and then onwards to Las Palmas as they had done many times before. In fact, Tejada had over 8,000 hours in the air and was considered highly experienced and was viewed as a top tier pilot.

At this point, the plane had been successfully refueled and Tejada had set off and was back in the air. So far, everything was fine and apart from the 4-hour-delay things were going smoothly and as expected. However, things would soon change
