Battling Bulimia, Stammers and ADHD | My Child’s Not Perfect

Battling Bulimia, Stammers and ADHD | My Child’s Not Perfect SUBSCRIBE to Origin:

A sudden and severe stammer, bulimia and a child with major aggression… no matter how big or small, rich or poor, one in ten children under the age of 16 is struggling with a mental health condition.

Whether it’s behavioural, emotional or clinical, some are born with a problem, whilst for others it can come out of nowhere. Whatever their condition, more than half of these vulnerable children will go undiagnosed - their problems being put down simply, to bad behaviour. A mental health issue is often an invisible illness that indiscriminately strikes at the heart of a family.

This documentary follows three families from across the UK as they embark on a journey to understand their child’s behaviour and learn to cope with it.

In this episode:

We follow the life of 15-year-old Hazel who is suffering with bulimia nervosa. She has the overwhelming urge to binge eat and feels compelled to purge afterwards, often making herself sick up to 20 times a day. Hazel’s attended therapy sessions for the past twelve months and with her school exams approaching, she’s desperately trying to take control of the endless cycle of vomiting and purging.

12 year old Lewis has immersed himself in the silent world of photography because of his stammer. He has suffered with difficulty speaking since it began suddenly after he moved schools four years ago. For Lewis, talking is an internal battle, one which he constantly loses. Lewis attends a 3 day intensive course using revolutionary breathing techniques in the hopes that he can find his voice again.

Lastly, Maddy whose parents have known she was different when she was just eight months old. Her aggressive behaviour, inability to make friends and constant defiance of rules has threatened to pull their family apart. Early intervention in any mental health issue is vital, and now she is eight years old, Maddy’s parents realise they don’t have long to get her a diagnosis and hopefully help her control her behaviour.
