This poem was born out of a car ride conversation. We talked about how we romanticize the idea of being in a relationship as teenagers. We create this idea of the perfect person in our heads, and we try to make the person fit into that idea by force. When we fall In love, usually it means falling in love with the version of the person that we have created in our minds. It’s crazy looking back in time and recognizing the facade and inauthenticity surrounding our past relationships, and realizing we only begin to SEE people once we reach a certain level of maturity. People begin to look like people, instead of that Romeo and Juliet painting we saw on that one trip to the art museum.
