This is according to the latest report of National Sample Survey Organisation . Average cost of cancer treatment in rural areas is over Rs 56,000 and over Rs 68,000 in urban. People spend Rs 27,136 and Rs 47,788 per case in every hospital stay for treating heart ailments in rural and urban areas respectively . The poorest 20% of the population go for the least number of hospitalisations. Nearly 90% of the poorest 20% Indians are not insured for health in rural and urban India. Among doctor’s fee, medicines, diagnostic tests and bed charges, medicines cost the most. In urban areas, people spend Rs 1,53,800 per hospitalisation per stay in private hospitals. Among all ailments, hospitalisations due to infectious diseases are highest in rural and urban areas.
