Russia, US and Europe Compete to Supply Fighter Jets to Vietnam!

Russia, US and Europe Compete to Supply Fighter Jets to Vietnam! Vietnam's first Defense and Security exhibition in Hanoi has attracted exhibitors from Russia, Europe and the United States who hope to sell fighter jets and weapons to Vietnam.

Russia, which has almost a monopoly in arms sales to Hanoi, where Vietnam had previously received an arms embargo from the United States that was only lifted in 2016, is expected to sell more Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets. The last two major contracts from Vietnam generated US $ 3 billion in revenue for Russia, which consisted of selling Su-30MK2 worth around US $ 1 billion and six submarines of the 636.1 Varshavyanka project at a price of more than US $ 2 billion.

Lockheed Martin, who has seen success in Vietnam in sales of communication satellites, expects Hanoi to show interest in its F-16 fighter jets, the latest version that has closed off massive sales from US allies.

Together with Lockheed Martin, the missile and weapons manufacturer Raytheon and MBDA from Europe also took part in the exhibition.

Vietnam also purchased the Hamilton Coast Guard class ship from the US Coast Guard in 2017. Vietnam recently also purchased ScanEagle drones for maritime surveillance.

Vietnam has previously indicated that it is open to diversifying arms procurement and will welcome Western and Israeli companies to bid for its arms procurement contracts.

Russia has long sold the Su-30, besides older jets like the Su-27, not to mention about 100 MiG-21s. In addition to warplanes and submarines, Vietnam imports weapons such as T-90S tanks and Gepard-3.9 frigates. Vietnamese shipyards are also building Project 1241.8 Molniya missile corvettes under Russian license.
