All this week I will be posting a Photo Deconstruction a day that focuses on gels and color, leading up to a LIVE webinar and special announcement! To register for the free webinar on 10/15 visit:
This Photo Deconstruction focuses on a futuristic avant garde fashion image created with three gelled strobes. The concept emerged as my talented makeup artist Yvonne attached a beautiful pattern of safety pins to the subject’s face using spirit gum. I felt this makeup looked surreal and futuristic, so I decided to light the scene in a way that would emphasize this idea.
The main light is a white beauty dish with a grid and a blue gel acting as the main source of illumination on the subject’s face. The second two lights are both bare bulbs (providing a crisp and specular light source), one on either side of the subject. They are further to the front of the frame, providing more wrap (and therefore more color) then a rim light would if it were further toward the background. The left strobe has an orange gel and the right strobe has a magenta gel.
Cooling down the white balance in post-processing helps to achieve an overall cooler tone throughout the image.
This image was conceived as one of my "play days" that I encourage ALL photographers to invest in doing. Play days let you experiment without cause, push the boundaries without reason and help you to grow. You might discover a new lighting trick, or just create photos for your portfolio.
So if you ask yourself, where does something like this fit in? It's all about helping to push yourself as a photographer!
