Santiago has seen looting and riots, in which at least 11 people died, ever since the government announced the increase in transport fares.
The demonstrations have since evolved into a movement with wider grievances aimed at addressing the rising cost of living and police conduct during demonstrations.
Chilean President Sebastian Pinera announced on Saturday, October 19, the suspension of transport fare hikes. On the same day, the government called a national emergency and mobilized military on the streets, placing a curfew.
