Bookshops: A Love Letter (Why Local Bookshops & Booksellers Are So Important)

I live in a remote forest with no bookshops. I miss them very much.

I enjoy the act of walking into a bookshop, looking at covers, talking to a knowledgeable bookseller, buying a book I’m excited about.

These days there’s lots of talk about eBooks, Audiobooks and online shopping. They all have their place. But nothing can replace the experience of visiting a local bricks and mortar bookstore. In 2019 many bookshops are thriving. But many others struggle. These shops are a sanctuary from a fast-moving world. Building a relationship with a trusted bookseller, someone you return to for book advice, is a valuable thing.

In this video I also touch on the vital role libraries have to play. How they helped me as a shy bookish kid in the Midlands. I’ll do a video on libraries and librarians soon.

Please do support your local bookshop. In an era of rent rises, huge online corporations, and Netflix, bookshops and booksellers need your support.
