In this Chemistry video in Hindi we explained the modern periodic law and the present form of the periodic table. The modern periodic law states that the properties of the elements are a periodic function of their atomic numbers. As the properties of the elements are dependent upon the atomic number we can say that these are dependent upon the electronic configuration of the elements. Basically, properties depend upon the electronic configuration of the outermost shell or the valence shell of the elements. According to the outermost shell - electronic configuration the modern periodic table is divided into four parts, viz., s-block, p-block, d-block and f-block. The vertical columns of the periodic table are called the groups and the elements of the same group share similar properties. The horizontal rows are called the periods. Different periods have different principal quantum numbers for the valence shell. There are 18 groups and 7 periods in the modern periodic table. s-block - the highest energy electron fills the s orbital.
p-block - the highest energy electron fills the p orbital.
d-block - the highest energy electron fills the d orbital.
f-block - the highest energy electron fills the f orbital.
