Beijing is "firmly opposed to an escalation of the trade war" with the United States, according to Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson Gao Feng who was speaking at a weekly press conference in the Chinese capital on Thursday.
"We are willing to solve problems through consultation and cooperation with a calm attitude. An escalation of a trade war is not good for China, not good for the United States, and not good for the people of the world," added Gao.
"Last Friday, China again listed some imports from the US as the target of additional tariffs, which was a necessary countermeasure that China had to take," he said.
"China's countermeasures are sufficient. However, under the current situation, we believe that what should be discussed is to cancel further tariffs on $550 (€497) billion of Chinese goods to prevent the trade war from escalating. China is now making solemn representations with the United States," he added.
Feng also expressed hope that China, Japan and South Korea could jointly cope with challenges, further strengthen economic and trade cooperation.
