Pakistan's ongoing effort to garner support from the international community against Indian government decision to revoke Article 370 and 35A changing the special status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories has till now not been able to show its expected results. The main reason for that is the active intervention of regional and global powers to facilitate backdoor engagement between India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions.
United States president, during his joint press talk with Prime Minister Imran Khan hinted towards the same as he said that efforts have been made in the same regard.
However, on official front, Trump clarified that mediation can only be done if both parties agree to it.
The backdoor channels have been active since the time foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and UAE visited Islamabad.
It is because of the backdoor engagement that Pakistan's efforts to gather support against India, to propose a resolution at the UNHRC failed also.
Even though 58 countries signed a joint statement siding with Pakistan's concerns of the worsening human right situation in Jammu and Kashmir; it could not attract 16 votes to present a formal resolution against India.
This backdoor diplomacy may be the right way to go, but it brings with it massive challenges for PM Imran Khan back home as he and his government has flared up the emotions of the people of Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir to extreme levels.
The way PM Khan and his leadership has targeted Modi accusing him of having RSS ideology and relating him to Adolf Hitler, along with his leaders calling for a final confrontation with India over Kashmir, tackling this intensity will be a massive challenge for the government.
