Tonight i am going to be reviewing "THE SHAPE" from Slipknot's 2001 Sophmore album IOWA. Today is also the 18th anniversary of IOWA and ironically i am reviewing a track from it? So we begin tonights review with another story of how THE SHAPE relates to my life and how i relate to the track itself. Well back in 2001 I was working at 2 restaraunts as a line cook and i was going to university full time. This combined with all of the stress of a drug addiction i was battling, combined with drinking alot. I felt very alone and confused about life. My drug of choice was pot, and i was doing mushrooms once a month, drinking on weekends etc.
There was also a great deal of people around me at the time that were less than positive, granted at the time i wasn't very positive myself. Birds of a feather flock together That isn't just a "cute saying". Now this track really connects with me because it's all about being completely disconnected from the world. In slipknot's case the track is about "THE SHAPE" from The Halloween films. AKA micheal myers. However it's all open to interpretation. The way i was feeling at the time was very similar to how this track described the mental state of someone completely breaking down and basically losing their mind. Now granted i didn't go on a homocidal killing spree there were sure days where i felt like doing so at this time, because of how much stress i was dealing with in university and my 2 jobs. There was never enough time to focus on what started to become really important to me. Anyways lets go ahead and listen to THE SHAPE right now guys......Alright so we are back. The chaos that spewes forth from your speakers as soon as you hit play is immense. Typical slipknot rage pours forth on this one but with some amazing guitar work and drumming from joey jordison. Couple this with Paul gray's amazing bass work the percussion of chris and clown and you have a match made in hell. However corey's rage fueled venomous vocals are also extremely haunting on this track as well. Moments of sheer insanity and pure rage work together to create a dark haunting atmosphere here as well. But the track itself really embeds itself through its use of heaviness and melody(yeah this song is very melodic guys so i don't know what all this talk about IOWA being their heaviest album is) but i digress. Opinions are opinions and everyone has them. What i get from this song is a sense of relief and honesty because these are the emotions i was feeling at the time. The rage, melody, loss of reason, not knowing who i was, struggling to figure out what i wanted to do with my life and many other things fully enveloped me at the time when hearing this entire album and "THE SHAPE" is no different.
