IELTS speaking: Band 8+ Pronunciation Features (Explained & Demonstrated!)

IELTS speaking: Band 8+ Pronunciation Features (Explained & Demonstrated!) IELTS speaking tips for band 8+ (and band 7)~ In IELTS speaking, Band 8+ requires that you master 5 different pronunciation features (with only rare slips). For IELTS speaking pronunciation, the 44 sounds of English are only 1 of those features -- and are not enough even to score band 7.

Band 7 candidates have mastered the first 4 pronunciation features (with only rare slips), Band 6 candidates have mastered the first 2 and have some (but not all) of the 3rd feature (the 44 sounds of English), and Band 5 or lower candidates have mastered none of the features.

The speaking test band descriptors (public version) gives details about each of the four marking criteria: Fluency & coherence, Lexical resource, Grammatical range and accuracy, and Pronunciation. (Download Band descriptors (public version) PDF here

However, that document doesn't include what features of pronunciation you need to achieve a certain band score. That's because there are several pronunciation features required.

In this video, I explain each of the pronunciation features required for a band 8+ and demonstrate each of them with examples. I also tell you what features are missing from each of the lower bands (band 5, band 6 and band 7) with a special focus on pronunciation problems of Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese native speakers.

I also offer tips on how to practice each of the pronunciation features to improve your score in pronunciation.
