The pollution in the national capital can give you cancer, even you are a non-smoker, according to doctor at the city's Ganga Ram Hospital. A case of a 29-year-old non-smoker diagnosed with fourth stage lung cancer has been reported at the hospital. Although the identity of the patient has not been revealed, it has been reported that the woman is a resident of Ghazipur since many years. The area of is considered to be very polluted area because of landfill site.
Dr Arvind Kumar, a chest surgeon at the Ganga Ram Hospital and chairperson of the Lung Care Foundation in Delhi, told India Today TV that during checkup they found that the 28-year-old woman had lung cancer. However, they were surprised to know that the woman is a non-smoker, but is still suffering from fourth stage lung cancer.
When asked if Delhi pollution was responsible for the disease, Dr Arvind said, "The patient is a non-smoker. In fact, no one smokes in her family. So there is no other choice but to accept that this is due to the polluted air of Delhi. We have seen many such cases before in which the patient is a non-smoker but is suffering from lung cancer, but this is the first such case in which the patient is suffering from lung cancer due to polluted air."
When asked if it was because the patient lives in a polluted area, which also has landfill site, the doctor said, "The air has no boundaries. As it blows, it also carries the pollution with itself and can leave its affect anywhere in the city. The same poisonous chemical is being found in Delhi's air which is found in a cigarette."
