Spreading awareness on ‘Janapada Sahityam’ (folk literature) by printing meaningful literature for bringing in greater social concern and staging street plays and singing theme-oriented songs will help conserve our cultural heritage, said Sri Krishnadevaraya University Vice-Chancellor S.M.Rahmatullah.

He was addressing the participants at a two-day national seminar on Janapada Vignanam - Parirakshana organised by the Telugu department of the university and Fossils Organisation, Thiruvananthapuram. The seminar concluded on Thursday.

The Vice-Chancellor said that ‘Janapada Sahityam’ was the mother of all forms of literature as it was enriched by people in rural areas, particularly women. “The young should, therefore, first learn what Janapada (folk) is and take initiatives to spread that knowledge widely.”

Lifestyle change
B.Krishna Reddy from Thiruvanathapuram, Chigecharla Krishna Reddy from Telugu university, Budati Venkateswarulu of the Central university and S.V. Pulla Reddy, principal of SKU College of Arts highlighted the significance of folk literature. G. Balasubramanyam presided over the seminar.

S.K. University Registrar K. Sudhakar Babu said lifestyles had changed so rapidly that many of traditional practices and hobbies had been consigned to the archives. An organisation, Sankalpa, was bringing people’s dying traditions to light and unearthing the hidden talent among younger generation. It was offering courses in classical and folk music by experienced teachers.

Janapada Sahityam was the richest and meaningful literature for all time to come, he said.

The other speakers also stressed the need for focussing on everybody’s responsibility to preserve this literature for the next generation.

Janapada songs sung by Mr. Sudhakar Babu attracted the attention of the audience. Cultural events were also organised and a large number of literary personalities from various places, scholars and students attended the proceedings on both days of the national seminar.
